Midtherm Flue Systems Good news for stove retailers! Wood burning emissions have been overestimated.

Midtherm would like to highlight the article on page 37 of the December issue Fires and Fireplaces magazine found here: https://www.firesandfireplaces.org/magazine_online.php

In summary previous press published a figure of 38% of particle matter being attributable to domestic wood burning, which was based on a 2015 survey of 1,206 members of the public using wood fuel to heat their homes and the data was used by BEIS to calculate the figure of 38%. It was also found that this early, small survey also included unregulated sources of emission such as chimineas, fire pits and pizza ovens. In early 2019 a more robust survey by SIA (the Stove Industry Alliance) used a much higher sample of 10,620 and found that actually less wood fuel is being burnt each year than the BEIS survey found. Applying the 2019 more accurate figure to the Clear Air Strategy reduces the percentage of particle matter being attributable to domestic wood burning down to 14.9%.
